Things To Consider When In A Car Accident

Updated: Mar 16, 2020

  • Stop your car and try to remain calm. Do not drive away or move your car unless it is causing an unsafe condition.

  • Call the police and advise them of your location.

  • If you or someone else is injured, call an ambulance. Do not try to move anyone who may be injured, as it may cause further injuries.

  • Exchange all necessary information with other drivers. This includes name, address, and insurance information.

  • Do not argue with or make any statements to any other drivers except for the exchange of information. Any statements you make could be used against you later on.

  • Try to get the names and addresses of any witnesses to the accident.

  • After the police arrive, advise the officer of your version of the accident.

  • Get the officer’s name and badge number, and ask for an accident report. The accident report will, among other things, describe how the accident occurred, provide the names of the individuals and witnesses involved, and show if anyone was issued traffic violations.

  • If you are injured, seek medical treatment immediately.

  • Notify your auto insurance carrier of the accident. Failing to promptly notify them could result in a denial of coverage.
